Resumo

O Grupo dos Vinte (G20) é formado por grandes economias e Estados poderosos e influentes. Ele foi criado para coordenar a governança econômica global e, como tal, era um fórum de governadores de bancos centrais e ministros das finanças até 2008, quando ocorreu a crise financeira global. Desde então, foi criado um fórum em nível de cúpula de chefes de estado. Ele evoluiu ao longo dos anos para incluir um escopo mais amplo de questões globais, como multilateralismo e segurança, entre outros. Este artigo discute por que o G20 existe, por que uma presidência do G20 é essencial e quais são os riscos, desafios e responsabilidades que ele enfrenta. Ele explora as várias áreas de responsabilidade do G20 devido ao poder de seus membros, tanto como coletivo quanto como indivíduos, nas principais questões globais, debates e reformas de governança. Este documento também enfoca o impulso da agenda reformista na Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMC), na Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), no multilateralismo e nos desafios e oportunidades exclusivos de uma Presidência do G20 no Sul Global.

Mikatekiso Kubayi, Institute for Global Dialogue associated with UNISA

Mr Mikatekiso Kubayi is a senior researcher at the Institute for Global Dialogue associated with UNISA (IGD). He is also a fellow at the Institute for Pan African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) as well as a PhD Candidate also at UJ.

Philani Mthembu, Institute for Global Dialogue associated with Unisa

Dr. Philani Mthembu is Executive Director at the Institute for Global Dialogue, an independent foreign policy think tank based in Tshwane (Pretoria), South Africa. Prior to joining the IGD, he pursued a joint doctoral programme (Dr. rer. pol.) with the Graduate School of Global Politics, Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), and the School of International Studies at Renmin University, Beijing (China). The focus of his dissertation was on the rise of emerging powers as sources of development cooperation in Africa, for which he was awarded Magna Cum Laude. He co-founded the Berlin Forum on Global Politics (BFoGP), a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of academic, expert and public understanding of global politics. While completing his Masters in International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, he headed the Academic Development Programme for first-year students and was elected as the first independent candidate to the Student Representative Council (SRC). His recent publications include a single authored book titled ‘China and India’s Development Cooperation in Africa: The Rise of Southern Powers’, and co-edited books titled ‘From MDGs to Sustainable Development Goals: The Travails of International Development’, ‘Africa and the World: Navigating Shifting Geopolitics’, ‘Africa-China Cooperation: Towards an African Policy on China?’, and ‘South African Foreign Policy Review Volume 4: Ramaphosa and a New Dawn for South African Foreign Policy’.

Ashraf Patel, Institute for Global Dialogue associated with UNISA

Mr. Ashraf Patel is research associate at IGD specialising in areas of digital economy, trade and development justice in the global south, ST & Innovation, and 4IR and the future of work. He is a graduate on the Masters in Management (MM)   Public Policy Development and Regulation Management (ICT PRM) from the Graduate School of Public and Development Management (P&DM), University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He has   had extensive experience and working knowledge  in southern Africa for over 18 years As a founder member of the Learning Information Network and Knowledge Centre (LINK) at Wits University, and program officer at a regional foundation, as well as consulting experience. He has worked extensively in the labour movement and developed the DITSELA labour institute course on Knowledge Economy, 4IR and Workplace, and is currently co editing the publication – 4IR and the Future of Work in South Africa (forthcoming UNISA Press, 2023).
