The Regionalization of Health Services: An analysis in light of the territorial planning
Title of the Project: The Regionalization of Health Services: An analysis in light of the territorial planning.
Object of Research: This research project intends to analyze the regionalization of health services in the perspective of territorial planning. The decentralization policy of the health administration promoted by the Unified Health System – SUS needs to be enhanced. That was greatly responsible for the current advances in health service supplies, while it made possible the transference of the decision-making responsibility for administrators of municipalities. This is because, the economies of the scales necessary in the supply of some health services, prevent the municipalities to get total autonomy in the management of the population care. Regional arrangements become a need, in different levels, to make possible the universalization of health services, in an efficient and democratic way. It is for this reason that the topic "regionalization of health" has been more and more important in the debate on policies enhancement for SUS. An essential effort to improve the regional management capacity of the Unified Health System - SUS is to analyze regions of health in the perspective of territorial planning and its political dimension, defining its urban network through the identification of the insertion of the municipalities in the productive structure and of its role in the spatial division of work.
